“I’M GOING with you.”

“You can’t.”

“The hell I can’t.”

Back from City Hall, they stood outside the repair shop.

Perfidor set his hand on his hips. Beseechingly, he turned his eyes to the sky. “Simon, for gods’ sake or Grenda’s sake or whatever deity has captured your imagination at the moment, listen to me. This woman I am going to see is a dear and valued friend. She’s done more than anybody except William to bring a measure of sanity into my life. If she wishes for only a limited number of people to know who she is and where she resides, I will do everything in my power to honor that wish. Do you understand?”

“So you’d blind me if I followed you?”

Perfidor hesitated, but only for the space of a blink. “Yes.”

Simon didn’t doubt him. Perfidor had sucked the light from Simon’s eyes once before, when Simon was still a bounty hunter. “Are you going with Will?”

“No. And I never would, unless my friend invited him. That alone should tell you how serious I am about protecting her privacy.”

Simon could almost feel his nerves snap. “What it tells me, you obstinate bastard,” he shouted, “is that your lover has no investment in Clancy Marrowbone! I do!”

“Gods, you’re exasperating!” Nostrils flaring, Perfidor walked in a circle and furiously kicked a cinder before facing Simon once more. “You said Ape is coming here to work on the Bubble.”

“He is, but I needn’t be around for him to do what he has to do.”

“And you’re expecting a delivery of some sort.”

“A number of deliveries. But those people have explicit instructions on where to put what. So I don’t need to be here for that, either.”

“Well, you’d better be here. That’s my final warning.”

Trembling with impotent rage, Simon walked away lest he do something foolish. He considered what Perfidor had said, and realized it probably would be a good idea if he stayed at the shop. “Give me your word you’ll tell me everything this woman says to you.”

Perfidor’s voice softened. “I give you my word. How could I not? I know how much Clancy means to you.” He walked toward his horse and climbed into the saddle.

Simon wanted to bluster out a face-saving retort—perhaps He means no more to me than any of my other friends—but Perfidor, a billow of dust in his wake, had already urged his horse into a gallop.

They still hadn’t gone over the papers they’d found.
